The unthinkable has happened in Belfast. Following a shocking defeat in the series opener, the Indian cricket team was determined to bounce back and level the series in the 2nd T20I on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Instead, fans witnessed a heart-stopping final-ball thriller that culminated in another historic milestone for the hosts. Ireland held their nerve to secure a slender 1-run victory over the reigning T20 World Champions, sealing a 2-0 series whitewash and sending shockwaves through the cricketing world.

A Sluggish Start and a Fighting Target

Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Shreyas Iyer's men were looking for early breakthroughs. The Indian bowlers performed admirably to keep the Irish scoring rate in check, with Prince Yadav (3/22) and Shivam Dube (2/25) leading the attack.

However, Ireland’s middle order provided crucial resistance. Harry Tector played a brilliant, anchoring innings, scoring 53 off 47 deliveries. He was ably supported by Ben Calitz, whose explosive 37 off 23 balls injected much-needed momentum into the innings. Despite continuous pressure, Ireland managed to post a competitive total of 154 for 8 in their 20 overs.

The Chase: Collapse, Recovery, and Heartbreak

Chasing 155 on a tricky Stormont surface, the Indian batting order faltered early and could never quite find its rhythm.

1.Early Wickets:Top Order Trouble.

The top order struggled against the disciplined Irish bowling attack led by Player of the Match Jai Moondra (3/32) and Matt Hollard (3/26). Key wickets fell at regular intervals in the powerplay, putting immense pressure on the middle order.

2.Tilak Varma's Resistance:The Lone Warrior.

Vice-captain Tilak Varma emerged as the only consistent answer for the Men in Blue. Varma played a composed and mature innings, top-scoring with a gritty 55 off 46 balls to keep India's hopes alive as partners fell around him.

3.The Final Over Drama:Down to the Wire.

The match went down to the absolute wire. Needing a miracle in the final over, India's lower order scrambled for runs. On the very last delivery of the match, tailender Prince Yadav smashed a massive six. However, the heroics came just a fraction too late, as India finished at 153 for 9, agonizingly short by exactly one run.

The Aftermath of a Historic Upset

The 2-0 series defeat marks the end of an era of sheer dominance for the Indian T20I squad. Going into this tour, India held an incredible unbeaten streak of 16 bilateral T20I series, a run that ironically began against Ireland back in August 2023.

For Shreyas Iyer, his debut series as full-time T20I captain has been a baptism by fire. The team will now have to deeply reflect on their batting collapses and middle-order vulnerabilities as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.

Meanwhile, for Ireland, this series goes down as one of their greatest cricketing achievements—their first-ever series victory over India across any format.
